Study Habits

Have you been doing it all wrong? Read this article and comment as to what works best for you...and what doesn't work! Is there anything you might try after reading this? Should I use a different approach in instruction?

  1. For me, I learn better when everything isnt so monotonous. If I'm just reading a textbook and trying to memorize a bunch of information, I don't retain it very well, because its not interesting. I retain information better when it is something I'm passionate about. That's why I'm doing well memorizing HTML and CSS code. I LIKE web design, so learning about it is easy for me. But I have a hard time in math sometimes learning new concepts, since the memorization process is very boring for me. When studying, I might try the varied location approach described in the article, just so everything isn't so monotonous when I'm studying. Your approach for instruction is good because it allows us freedom. We don't have mindless busywork to do, we have lectures that give us the information we need, then we have to make note of it and retain it in whatever way works for us. For me, this type of class works very well.

  2. I find it interesting that I have a better chance of learning things when I study in a busy area. When they said that the background noice makes what you learned more enriching, I found that very intereting because I always thought it just took your attention away. But if you are able to keep your attention on your work, a busy enviroment would probably do better. Also varying what you study at a time like when you work out seems like it could work, because you do need to develop individual skills in order to be successful at school, job and in other areas of life. If you only focus on one area you will not be able to do well in each different class, because each class requires a different set of skills.

What works best for me when I study would be for instance if I had an upcoming vocabulary test, I would first study the first word then continue onto the second word but then go back to the first word before going on. I can remeber the words better because I am going over the definintion more than once. I find for myself that reptitiion helps me remember things better. From the article I learned that mixing up problems in a lesson may help me to remeber the equations. Like they did with the problem set, because it seemed like a lot of the students did better after trying the new method. Also I may try studying in a different room to see if that changes anything. I do not think you should use a differet approach for instruction, I like the way you teach. (:

  4. When studying, I need to be in a space, or room away from distractions such as people and television. Scheduled time and place would never work for me, because it gets boring and routine, which will ultimately cause me to lose track because I'm thinking about how bland a boring studying is. Studying outside in my backyard has also proved to be helpful, because the sun and nature relaxes me. There is nothing wrong with the way that you teach, its just the disrespectful talkative students that should try a different approach. The constant disruptions make it hard for me as an individual to learn as well as some of my other class mates who are really here for and education.

  6. What works best for me is pretty much what the article describes. I never really sit down and study one thing all at one time. Usually, I spread it out in between a few days.

    Also, I like to change my atmosphere. When I study I always have the radio on, and some days I'll have it on the jazz station and other days on the rock station, it depends.

    As for you changing the way you teach, I definitely don't think you should. The way that the class is like an open discussion all of the time really helps me, because then I can relate a concept back to what someone said, or how the class reacted to what was said. It helps me remember.

  8. The article suggests that visiting work periodically works better than studying it all at one time. I agree 100% with that statement. Whenever I have a test, I sometimes procrastinate and cram everything in the night before. I do well on the test, but I also forget the information that I desperately tried to remember in a matter of three hours. Also, studying in different environments seems like it'll help a lot too. I can sometimes bore myself when I'm studying in my bedroom, rather than studying in another room and remembering most of what I studied. I've been studying well enough to get me through my past years of school, but I can also make my studying habits better.

  10. I usually study with flashcards. They are an effective way for me to remember vocabulary words because I can just test myself. It's hard to study when a class is so boring or my notes are too long. So notetaking can sometimes work, but not all the time. It's interesting how studying in two different rooms can have a positive effect on the next day's test or something. I usually study in my room since it's calm and quiet. Even though the next day I might blank out after looking at the notes so many times the night before. Therefore, after reading this article I am definetly going to trying the different room technique and mixing up the work. Studying and taking breaks. Hopefully it will work for me. I like this class and I can actually focus because we discuss and the class is interesting.

  12. When I study, I do it over the period of the day. I'll study for about half an hour and take a break and do productive things. I'll clean or eat. Then I'll come back to studying after letting it all absorb and study again until I feel as though I understand the material. Also, when I study, I study everything in one night like the article says. I work on different subjects in one session. I think I'm gonna try working in a more cluttered room than a clean open room because the former would be less boring than the later. I usually study in my room in the same place as I always do, so for my next study session, I'll make sure it isn't in my room. I'll try and study outside, or in a busy area. Also, I can't study with music on. Especially if it's music I like or recognize because I always tend to sing along or realize the song is playing and I get distracted. Easily.

  13. Me personally I think i learn better with hands on learning. Sitting in a room with a book has never really been my thing. It seems pointless and tiresome. I instantly become sleepy and that's all I become focus on. Then when I am finally done reading I hardly ever remember what I have read. I've seen myself getting better at the book reading technique, but i never get my full knowledge of what I'm reading. I think this class is good at disscussing and learning with experiences, but we also read a lot of stuff. The reading we do in this class is a lot but i retain the information some type of why. I think because I am actually interesested in the text we read.

  14. When I study I have to be in a quiet place by myself. It helps me study because i can concentrate on my studies. When I study i have to have food nearby. However, food is a distraction. I focuse more on eating then studying. It's hard for me to eat and study at the same time. I can never do that which is very upsetting for me because that's the only time i can't multitask. It is very common for me to get hungry when trying to remember a material. It is also hard for me to study when there is someone in the room. I hate when there is a person or a group of people in the same room as me. A person's movement distracts from what i'm trying to learn. Any movements can distract me.

  15. What I usually do when studying is read and try to practice the problems, if possible. If memorization is required, then I look over the information and recite it to myself. After reading this however, I think I would like to try the multiple environment technique. I've heard people speak of similar techniques, but reading this article makes it appear as a viable method. Since the brain makes many associations, remembering a location may help in the recall of other information. Also, the mixing of different materials when studying seems logical, and I think I'll try that as well. As for your instruction methods, I'm not sure if this would have any impact.

    When I study, I usually have some type of thing that could be used as an distraction. When I work I need the TV or some type of music playing. I believe this helps me work fast and better. When working in a setting that has no noise, I usually become distracted with simple things such as a piece of paper. My mom totally thinks im weird for working that way, but that's her. I think my way of working benefits me in a way because I can work in different conditions without being distracted. I do disagree with the article when it says people work better periodically. I need to finish a subject all at the same time, or else my brain can not be as focused as the first time. Plus I feel less stress when I finish it all at once.

    My studying habits are somewhat similar to the ones that were described in the article. I don't study in the same spot two days in a row. One day I might study outside in my backyard, the next day I might be in my room, and another day I would study in the living room. I also go from homework subject to homework subject. If I am writing an essay and I get stuck, I just move on to another homework assignment that is completely different (like math). When I work I do give myself frequent breaks. To sit in one spot for a long period of time and get things finished is almost impossible for me. If I feel myself drifting off, I will step away from the homework for about ten minutes and take a breather. Overall, I agree with the article, working in increments allows your brain to breath and refresh itself.

  19. I tend to study in the same place everyday. I do not, however, study the same subject or method constantly, I jump from one thing to another in order to keep my brain interested. I tend to bore quickly and find my mind wandering to other things if I focus on one thing for too long. To counter act my procrastination, I take frequent breaks for short periods of time so that I can get more done. If I get stuck on something, I move on to something else or take a break altogether, and come back to it later. I plan to try working in different places for a few weeks and see if there is any noticeable improvement in my performance. I don't believe there are any improvements you can legitimately make to your teaching method. It is impractical to attempt to teach in a different setting every class, or attempt to devise new ways to have us answer questions about the reading.

  20. There are somethings I need to change about my studying habits if I want to do better. I know that the place where I study has a lot to do with the effectiveness of my studying sessions. I've tried the library before, and it is much better than home but I didn't notice a significant increase in the amount of work I get done. I would be good if I also tried spreading out study sessions instead of cramming in one night.
